What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a mutual learning process in which an experienced person (mentor) provides knowledge, guidance, and support to a less experienced person (mentee). In this process, mentors aim to guide and help you achieve your goals.

What Can Be Discussed During Mentoring?
The purpose of the program is to support your academic, personal, and professional development. Below are some topics you may seek support on during the mentoring process:
- Academic Support: Study strategies, finding resources, course planning.

- Career Planning: Goal setting, job/internship applications, building a professional network.

- Personal Development: Increasing self-confidence, communication skills, stress management.

- University Life: Adapting to campus, social activities, effective time management.

- Sector Knowledge: Trends in your field, preparing for professional life.
Example Questions You Can Ask Your Mentor:
- What opportunities did choosing this department open up for you?

- How did you stay motivated during difficult times?

- What should I do to prepare for professional life?

- What should I pay attention to during my first job interview?

- Where can I follow sector-related news and trends?

- What were your priorities when setting your goals?

- Which companies do you recommend for the IMEP process?

Things to Consider During the Mentoring Process:
- Be Clear and Honest: Clearly express your goals and expectations.

- Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask about anything you're curious about.

- Be Open to Feedback: Consider your mentor’s suggestions and try to implement them.

- Be Punctual: Attend meetings on time and well-prepared.

- Be Actively Involved: This process is for your development, make the most of it.

Things Students Should Avoid in Mentoring:
- Attending Unprepared: Don’t go to meetings without identifying your goals or questions.

- Creating One-Sided Expectations: Don’t expect your mentor to solve all your problems; contribute actively to the process.

- Being Solely Job-Oriented: Don’t neglect the personal and academic support aspects of the relationship.

- Ignoring Feedback: Not considering or applying your mentor’s advice reduces the effectiveness of the process.

- Being Disrespectful: Failing to value your mentor’s time and effort can harm the relationship.

- Violating Confidentiality: Don’t share private information discussed with your mentor with others.

To Build a Strong Relationship with Your Mentor, Please…
- Be Respectful: Value your mentor’s time and support.

- Take Notes: Record what was discussed and apply the suggestions.

- Be Determined: Show effort to reach your goals.

We hope this mentoring journey will be valuable for both you and your mentor. Remember, every step you take in this process will contribute to your personal and professional development. Planning your meetings and getting the most out of your mentor is entirely your responsibility.
For any questions, you can reach out to the Bukagem Faculty Representative in your department or to the BTU Career Development Application and Research Center.
